About

A little over a year ago, a small group of people began meeting in an apartment in Edgewater with the dream of helping this neighborhood become all that it can be. We didn’t have all the answers, and at times we didn’t know what we were doing. But we had one thing – hope.

As we began to really see and listen to our neighbors, we noticed that Chicago is filled with hurry, worry and busy. So we started serving in as many organizations as possible – trying to help where we could and learning as much as we could. We wanted to do more. We wanted to help our neighbors catch a glimpse of the hope that we have, even if only for a second. That is where we got the idea for #chalktheblock.

Every other week, we chalk the streets of Edgewater, Uptown and Roger’s Park with messages of hope. Sure, at times this may seem cheesy or simplistic, but we continue to be amazed by the stories of people who have been impacted by #chalktheblock. As much as these messages have encouraged others, they have also changed us. Our small group of friends has now become Community Christian Church. We’ve outgrown our apartment and we now gather for worship each Sunday at Swift Elementary School. The messages we chalk are more than just positive words. They represent the kind of people we want to be – the kind of church we want to be and the kind of city we want to live in. We want to live out what we write. We want to walk the chalk. Will you join us?
